What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

MLD was first developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid, Danish doctors and pioneers in the field of physical therapy. Initially, they used it to treat patients with chronic sinusitis and other immune-related disorders. Over time, the technique gained recognition for its ability to alleviate various health issues.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Works

The human lymphatic system is an extensive network of vessels and nodes that help maintain fluid balance and support the immune system. Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on mainly on muscle contractions and external stimulation to keep lymph fluid moving - diaphragmatic breathing and wearing compression garments are other ways to support healthy lymph flow.

During an MLD session, a trained therapist uses gentle, rhythmic hand movements and precise sequences of strokes to encourage the lymphatic fluid to flow back up toward the notch above your collarbone, referred to as “terminus”. These movements open and stimulate lymphatic vessels, helping to remove cellular waste, proteins, and excess fluid from the body's tissues. MLD is a painless and non-invasive procedure that usually leaves clients feeling deeply relaxed.

MLD is performed unclothed on the massage table, and unlike massage, it doesn’t use any sort of cream or lubrication so that the skin and lymph vessels can be stretched and manipulated. It’s also worth noting that a full-body MLD session involves working on the abdomen, unless medical conditions contraindicate working in this area, or you have a strong aversion to me touching your belly.
